The Honbu

After just missing out on a medal position in the British Championships in Crystal Palace and qualifying to join the ‘British Squad’ to train with Ticky Donovan in 1987-88,

The 2016 National Championships were always going to be different, a new venue, students who hadn't competed in a couple of years returning to competition and the atmosphere which was very much like the 1990's once again.

Our most recent Gasshuku may have rivaled the Autumn in terms of  atmosphere and enthusiasm. It was a delight to train surrounded by students from clubs with which the Honbu has close ties: Queen Camel, Merriot, Milfield and, now, Cardiff University.

The K1 Karate World Championships were held in Okinawa in November 2015 and this was the perfect excuse to visit the ‘home’ of traditional Karate, to explore the island, to watch world class Karate performances and take the opportunity to train with Sensei Tetsuhiro Hokama, 10th Dan Goju Ryu.

Okinawa, in the Ryukyu Islands, is about two and a half hours flying time south of Tokyo. It is about 466 square miles and one of hundreds of islands in an archipelago stretching from the tip of Kyushu to the island of Taiwan. Sub-tropical in climate, the weather was very temperate in late November /early December.
